SanDisk = American company infographic
Ms.Gadgets

SanDisk is a famous manufacturer, but which country is it from?

Mr.Gadgets

SanDisk is a flash memory manufacturer headquartered in Milpitas, California, United States.

SanDisk is an American company that develops and sells flash memory products such as SD cards, microSD cards, USB flash drives, and portable SSDs. Since its founding in 1988, it has been a pioneer in the flash memory industry, establishing numerous industry standards.

Although it was acquired by Western Digital in 2016 (originally announced at approximately $19 billion), it was spun off and became independent again on February 24, 2025, re-listing on the NASDAQ market under the ticker symbol “SNDK”.

So it’s an American manufacturer. But we see them often in Japan, don’t we?

Mr.Gadgets

That’s right. SanDisk has a partnership with Japan’s Kioxia (formerly Toshiba Memory) spanning over 25 years, and product manufacturing bases are located within Japan. It is a company with very deep ties to Japan.

Many of the SanDisk products seen at Japanese electronics retailers or on Amazon use NAND flash memory manufactured at factories within Japan. While you might have the image of an “overseas manufacturer,” a characteristic of SanDisk is its inseparable relationship with Japan in terms of production.

SanDisk Company Profile

Let’s take a closer look at what kind of company SanDisk is, from basic information to its Japanese operations and main products.

Basic SanDisk Information

Ms.Gadgets

Please tell me the official name of SanDisk and what kind of business the company does.

Mr.Gadgets

The official name is “SanDisk Corporation.” It is a semiconductor manufacturer that focuses primarily on the development and sales of flash memory-related products.

Based on NAND flash memory technology, SanDisk develops a wide range of product categories, including the following:

  • Memory Cards: SD cards, microSD cards, CompactFlash
  • Flash Drives: USB flash drives (Ultra / Extreme / Extreme Pro)
  • Portable SSDs: Extreme Portable SSD, Extreme PRO Portable SSD
  • Internal SSDs: Data center SSDs, PC SSDs

In the flash memory industry, the company has been deeply involved in setting standards for CompactFlash and SD cards and holds numerous patents. Specifically, the role SanDisk played in the commercialization of NAND flash memory is immense, and it is no exaggeration to say that the company laid the foundation for the recording media used in today’s smartphones and digital cameras.

About the Japanese Subsidiary

SanDisk’s Japanese subsidiary, “SanDisk LLC,” is based in Konan, Minato-ku, Tokyo. The Japanese entity was originally established in 1992 and was renamed Western Digital GK in 2021, but following the spin-off, it changed its name back to “SanDisk LLC” in August 2025.

Ms.Gadgets

So they have a base in Japan too. Do they have manufacturing factories?

Mr.Gadgets

Yes. The NAND flash memory used in SanDisk products is manufactured at factories in Yokkaichi, Mie Prefecture, and Kitakami, Iwate Prefecture, through a joint venture with Japan’s Kioxia.

The partnership between SanDisk and Kioxia (formerly Toshiba Memory) is a famous partnership in the industry with over 25 years of history. This collaboration is one of the longest-running joint ventures in the flash memory industry, which speaks to the strength of the trust between the two companies.

Construction of Fab2 (K2) at the Kitakami factory was completed in July 2024, with mass production scheduled to begin in the first half of 2026. It will produce state-of-the-art 8th generation 218-layer 3D flash memory to meet demand for AI and data centers. Note that the Japanese government has approved large-scale subsidies, showing that the country also views these manufacturing bases as highly important.

The joint venture agreement between the two companies has been extended until December 31, 2034, and a long-term stable supply system is expected to continue. Approximately 80% of production capacity is shared equally between the two companies (about 40% each), with the remaining 20% held independently by Kioxia.

SanDisk’s Main Products

Ms.Gadgets

SanDisk’s History and Reliability

Let’s look at the history that led SanDisk to its current position and its reliability as a manufacturer.

From Founding to Growth

Ms.Gadgets

Is SanDisk a long-standing company?

Mr.Gadgets

It was established in 1988, so it is a company with over 35 years of history. It is a pioneer in the industry regarding the commercialization of flash memory.

SanDisk was founded in 1988 as “SunDisk” by Eli Harari, Sanjay Mehrotra, and Jack Yuan. All three were engineers with extensive experience in the semiconductor industry and held a vision that was advanced for the time: the commercialization of flash memory. Note that co-founder Sanjay Mehrotra later became the CEO of Micron Technology, which shows the scale of his influence on the semiconductor industry.

The original company name was “SunDisk,” but it is said to have been changed to “SanDisk” in 1995 to avoid confusion with Sun Microsystems, and it listed on the NASDAQ market that same year. After listing, its performance expanded along with the rapid growth of the flash memory market, and it contributed significantly to the spread of digital cameras and MP3 players.

Acquisition by Western Digital and Re-independence

Ms.Gadgets

They were acquired by Western Digital, right? What is the situation now?

Mr.Gadgets

They were acquired by Western Digital in 2016 (initially announced at approximately $19 billion). However, the spin-off was completed on February 24, 2025, and they have re-listed on the NASDAQ market as an independent company once again.

After the acquisition, SanDisk operated as a core brand of Western Digital’s flash memory business unit. However, the HDD business and the flash memory business face different market environments, and there were increasing situations where independent management decisions were required.

Against this background, the spin-off was officially completed on February 24, 2025. SanDisk has started again as an independent publicly traded company.

With this spin-off, SanDisk has become capable of management specialized in the flash memory business. Especially with the rapid expansion of demand for high-capacity SSDs and high-speed NAND flash for data centers accompanying the growth in demand for AI, having a structure that allows for rapid decision-making and investment judgment is a major strength.

Is SanDisk a Reliable Manufacturer?

SanDisk reliability chalkboard style
Ms.Gadgets

In the end, is SanDisk a reliable manufacturer? Is it okay to buy their products?

Mr.Gadgets

SanDisk has a history of over 35 years and is a company that has established the industry standards for flash memory. They have a track record of being widely adopted for professional use, so it can be said that their reliability is high.

  • Over 35 years of history: Since its founding in 1988, it has continued to lead innovation in flash memory technology.
  • Industry standard setter: Deeply involved in the standardization of CompactFlash, SD cards, etc., and holds numerous patents.
  • Long-standing partnership with Japanese companies: Maintains a joint production structure with Kioxia (formerly Toshiba) for over 25 years. The agreement has been extended until 2034.
  • Professional support: The Extreme PRO series is adopted by professional photographers and video creators.
  • Large-scale manufacturing foundation: Secures one of the world’s largest flash memory production capacities across two bases in Yokkaichi and Kitakami.
  • Management strengthening through re-independence: Established a management structure focused on the flash memory business through the 2025 spin-off.

The price range is also set within a reachable range for individual users, and it is evaluated as a cost-performance-excellent choice. For products with equivalent specs, it is a brand that comes up as a candidate alongside Samsung and Kioxia. We recommend choosing a reliable store that handles genuine products when purchasing.

Ms.Gadgets

I am relieved. I will consider SanDisk’s SD cards and SSDs as options.

Mr.Gadgets

Yes. They have a wide range of products tailored to various uses, such as SD cards, USB flash drives, and portable SSDs, so please compare and consider them.
